Does everyone get super anxious about driving in the cold dark winter nights or is that just me?

The thought of needing to go driving in the snow, ice and bitterly cold nights send shivers up my spine. The one thing I can do which makes me feel a lot safer is make sure my car is winter ready.

Here is the steps I carry out to ensure my family stays as safe as possible when in my vehicle.

Ensure you regularly top up oil and water. If you was to become low on these on a winter night the last thing you want to be doing roadside is popping your bonnet and filling them up.

Check tyre pressure regularly to ensure you do not get any unnecessary punctures or blow outs.

Invest in a tyre gauge so you can check for yourself you have enough tread to maintain grip on all road surfaces.

What is the legal tyre tread depth?

The legal tyre tread depth for cars in the UK and Europe is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, according to law. The tread must meet this minimum requirement across its complete circumference

Worn tyres are particularly dangerous in the wet because a tyre’s tread helps disperse water away from the contact patch between tyre and road. If there’s less tread depth, less water can be shifted, increasing the risk of aquaplaning and losing grip.

If you live in a snowy country maybe look at investing in snow tyres

Keep warm clothing and blankets in the car in case of a break down

Always carry screen wash and deicer in your boot so you are prepared for bad weather or even worse a screen full of dead flies haha.

Get someone to help you check all bulbs once a week to make sure you are always visible on the road.

Get a Regular service

Book your MOT a month before its due to ensure you have time to get all repairs carried out before expiry.
