Healthy Hobbies The Whole Family Will Love Taking Part In
Do you feel like your family need some new things to do? Don’t worry, after the lockdown and the ongoing pandemic all around us, a lot of parents are in the same boat! The kids are bored, you’ve run out of movies to watch, and there’s nothing much else to do than sit in front of a screen.
However, picking up some new hobbies right now could be just what you need. Even better, picking up a healthy, active hobby that the whole family can take part in will really grant you some peace of mind! And to help you ensure that your partner and kids are getting involved and having some fun, here are four healthy hobbies everyone will love to take part in.
Swimming
Swimming is a lot of fun, no matter how old you are! You get to jump or dive in the water, mess around with floats, pool noodles, and wave machines, and on summer days you can hit the beach for some fun in the ocean. And kids tend to take to water just like a duckling would – the younger they are when they first go swimming, the stronger a swimmer they’ll end up becoming.
So get the kids down to the local pool, and make sure there are some beach days on your summer holidays itinerary! Even as an adult swimming is one of the best exercises you can do, simply because water tension means you have to work harder. As such, you won’t need to spend as much time exercising on a regular basis as you would on land.
Dancing
Dancing is a great way to both have some fun and maintain your fitness levels, and it’s also an incredibly accessible form of exercise for people of all ages. So even if you’ve got a toddler in the house who is still a little unsteady on their feet, they can still get up and take part!
Clear the floor in the living room, turn on some music or put a dance routine tutorial on the TV, and call the whole family in. Dancing can make us feel more in touch with our bodies, can help us to bolster the bonds with the people we love, and it’s also a great way to shed a few pounds, no matter your current fitness levels. So if you were thinking about that new weight loss drug wegovy, just get up, turn on some music, and get pumping and locking!
Fishing
You might not think so, but fishing can be a good form of exercise too. It can be low impact most of the time, sure, but it still carries a lot of benefits for those taking part. And seeing as fishing has long been seen as a good parent and child bonding activity, why not break out a rod and take the kids down to a nearby lake?
Walk there to get the activity started off right, use your muscles to pitch up a tent and the chairs, and you’ll also need to regularly engage your upper body strength (including your heart and lungs) to catch and reel in fish too. You might find that your shoulders become a lot more bulky as time goes on!
Gardening
Gardening is one of the healthiest hobbies you can have. Why? Because it’s green! It gets you outside into nature, it ensures you’re building a sustainable backyard for both yourself and the animals around you, and you get to grow and eat your own food. What could be better? Of course, gardening can take some effort to get started with, but even just simple little jobs can get both you and the kids involved in building a green world.
Hand out mini pairs of gloves and trowels to your children, hand them some small plant pots to fill up with soil, and then let them pick a seed packet to sow into it. Keep this theme going by getting them to make and paint their own plant labels, and hand them a watering can. Make sure they know it’s their responsibility to keep the plant watered and in enough sunlight, and whoever grows their plant the best might even get a little treat out of it!
If your family needs some more hobbies, make sure you’re focusing on healthy activities you can do together. The more you spend time as a family, the more you’ll have fun and build the bonds you’ve always dreamed of.
